Writing on front: Leo Allen step-brother. Leo N.H. Allen who went down on USS San Diego but was rescued something over 3 hours went down 12 mi with the tidewater cold. He has $200.00 War Sairn Stamps. Was in sight of land when went down could not see land when rescued came out more determined for Service. Mrs. Lavena Monsey photo

LAVENA MONSEY, elementary teacher at Lee School in Duncan for 24 years. The photo was taken in 1966, just prior to her retirement after a total of 31 years of teaching. The student's name is not known.  Submitted by Duane Monkres

Bill Monsey photo

LAVENA MONSEY and W.E. "BILL" MONSEY. Mr. Monsey first taught at Willow Springs, OK in a two room school house (Mrs. Monsey taught in the second classroom), and later became Superintendent of Schools in Loco, OK. He then served between 1942 and '47 as Stephens County School Superintendent. While county superintendent, Mr. Monsey was instrumental in consolidating the rural Burris and Doyle school districts and the Velma and Alma school districts. Following his tenure as county superintendent, Mr. Monsey was principal of Irving Elementary School in Duncan. When the district built its 4th elementary school, Mark Twain, Mr. Monsey served as principal of both Irving and Mark Twain. In 1968, he retired from teaching and administration after 31 years of service.

Courthouse 1947 photo

The Stephens County Courthouse.  I ran across this photo in a craft show. At the time the courthouse stood in a circle on Main at 10th St, facing east. I would guess this picture was taken in about 1948 based on a partial image of a 46 or 47 Chevy which doesn't show up in this picture because of size limitations.  Submitted by Duane Monkres
